Furnace Startup Checklist for the Cold Season

Check Your Thermostat

  • Switch to Heat Mode:
Set the thermostat to "heat" mode and set the desired temperature a few degrees higher than the current room temperature to test if the furnace turns on.
  • Inspect Settings:
Make sure the thermostat is set to the correct temperature and time settings. If you have a programmable thermostat, adjust the heating schedule for winter.
  • Replace Batteries (if needed):
If your thermostat runs on batteries, replace them to ensure uninterrupted functionality throughout the cold season.

Inspect the Furnace Filter

  • Check the Filter Condition:
Furnace filters trap dust, dirt, and debris, keeping your system running efficiently. A clogged filter can reduce airflow and strain the system, leading to higher energy bills or breakdowns.
  • Replace or Clean the Filter:
Replace disposable filters or clean reusable ones. During the cold months, check the filter every 1-2 months and replace as needed. If you have a media filter, replacement can extend to every 6-12 months.

Clean Around the Furnace

  • Clear the Area Around the Furnace:
Remove any objects, boxes, or flammable materials from around the furnace to ensure proper airflow and safety.
  • Vacuum Dust and Debris:
Gently vacuum around the furnace and its vent openings to remove dust buildup that could affect its performance.

Check Furnace Vents and Registers

  • Inspect All Vents and Registers:
Ensure that all supply and return air vents in your home are clean, open, and unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or curtains.
  • Clear Exterior Vents:
If your furnace has an outdoor exhaust vent, check for any obstructions like leaves, snow, or debris, which could block airflow.

Test the Furnace Ignition

  • Turn on the Furnace:
After setting your thermostat to "heat" mode, listen for the furnace to ignite. If the furnace doesn't start or produces unusual noises (like banging or squeaking), it may need professional inspection.
  • Check Pilot Light (if applicable):
If your furnace has a pilot light, ensure it's lit and burning a steady blue flame. A yellow or flickering flame may indicate a problem.

Inspect the Furnace Flame

  • Check the Flame Color:
A healthy furnace flame should be blue, indicating proper combustion. If the flame is yellow or orange, there may be a gas or combustion issue that requires professional attention.

Test Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors

  • Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
Furnaces can produce carbon monoxide if not functioning properly. Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are installed near bedrooms and the furnace. Test the batteries and replace them if necessary.
  • Test Smoke Alarms:
Smoke alarms are essential for home safety. Test them and replace batteries as needed to ensure they are operational throughout the cold season.

Check Furnace Humidifier (if applicable)

  •  Inspect and Clean:
If your furnace has a built-in humidifier, make sure it’s clean and functioning properly. Replace the humidifier pad if necessary and set the humidity level for winter.

Bonus Tip: Monitor for Unusual Sounds or Odors

  • Listen for Strange Noises:
Unusual sounds like banging, rattling, or squeaking could indicate loose or worn parts that need attention.
  • Smell for Unusual Odors:
A burning smell when the furnace first starts up is normal as it burns off dust. However, persistent odors or the smell of gas should be addressed by a professional immediately.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

  • Annual Furnace Tune-Up:
Even if your furnace seems to be working fine, scheduling an annual inspection with Customer Comfort ensures optimal performance, prolongs the lifespan of the furnace, and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns during winter.
