Air Conditioning Startup Checklist for the Hot Season

• Switch to Cool Mode:
  Change the thermostat setting to "cool" mode and set the desired temperature lower than the current room temperature to test if the air conditioner kicks on. 
• Inspect Settings:
  Make sure your programmable thermostat is updated with summer schedules and settings, so your home remains cool when needed.
• Replace Batteries (if applicable):
  If your thermostat is battery-powered, replace the batteries to ensure it functions properly throughout the season.

• Check the Filter:
  Air filters should be checked regularly, especially at the start of the cooling season. A clogged or dirty filter can reduce efficiency and restrict airflow.
• Replace or Clean the Filter:
  If the filter is dirty, replace it (if disposable) or clean it (if reusable). During the summer, check the filter every month and replace it as needed.

• Clear Debris:
  Remove leaves, dirt, grass clippings, and other debris from around the outdoor condenser unit. Ensure there’s at least 2 feet of clear space around the unit for proper airflow.
• Clean the Unit’s Fins and Coils:
  Gently clean the condenser fins and coils using a garden hose (make sure the unit is off) to remove dust and debris. Be careful not to bend the fins.
• Inspect for Damage:
  Check the outdoor unit for any signs of damage, such as bent fins, cracked coils, or corrosion. If you notice any issues, contact a professional for repairs.

• Ensure Power Supply:
  Make sure the circuit breaker that controls your AC unit is in the "on" position. If it has tripped, reset it and monitor for any further electrical issues. If the breaker is tripped, contact us to have us inspect the AC unit.

• Check for Insulation Damage:
  Inspect the refrigerant lines that connect the outdoor condenser to the indoor evaporator coil. Ensure that the lines are properly insulated and there are no signs of wear or damage.
• Replace Missing Insulation:
  If the insulation is damaged or missing, replace it to maintain the system’s energy efficiency.

• Turn on the AC:
  After completing the steps above, turn on the air conditioner and check the airflow from your vents.
• Check for Cold Air:
  Ensure the air blowing from the vents is cool and strong. If airflow is weak or warm, there may be an issue with the system that needs attention.

• Keep an Eye on Usage:
  After starting up your AC system, monitor your energy bills. A sudden spike in energy use could indicate inefficiencies in your air conditioning system that need addressing. 

• Annual Tune-Up:
  Schedule a professional HVAC technician to perform an annual inspection and tune-up on your air conditioning system. This ensures your system is working efficiently, helps to identify potential issues early, and prolongs the life of the unit.
• Check Refrigerant Levels:
  A technician will check refrigerant levels and top them off if necessary. Low refrigerant can reduce cooling efficiency and strain your system.
